Africa (Reggae Nights)

Africa (Reggae Nights)

Marijuana-yellow eyes,
samba shoes doing the red dust-shuffle,
green fingers pointing up to Jah
who throws an amber beat
from within an African sunset
over perilous pools
where hippos rule;
where the King of the Jungle is myth.

It’s a dance of faith,
not religion or hope,
a dance of joy for faith
in better times ahead.

Sunrise and Jah is gone;
morning light reeks
of khaki police uniform sweat,
but there’s no sign of the vultures;
they’ve had their feast
on the innocents’ souls,
their flesh
their bones
baby-yellow
in the red sand
of the land,
where hippos rule
in perilous green pools;
where the ‘King of the Jungle’
is the biggest fool.
